Theories linked To Our Music Video

Carol Vernallis 'Fuctions and Meanings of Music Video Editng' theory - http://elsiewilliamsona2.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/carol-vernallis-music-video-theorist.html

In relation to our music video when it comes to camera Vernallis says a 'common feature' is establishing shots, close ups and extreme close ups of the subject which the most focus (i.e. the band or artist). We challenge this aspect as our music video is primarily narrative based which the band is not solely the focus of, other than the photo of the lead singer.

When it comes to editing this theorist argues that a main convention is music videos break the 'rules' of continuity. Our video in some ways can be seen to be seen to disrupt continuity with there being parts where the band is playing instruments, but for the majority of our music video there is a switch between two narratives (the real world being the sleepover and the imagined the spooky story) so it needs to hold continuity for it to make sense to the audiences whenever the narrative changes. Furthermore, another aspect Vernallis says that in music videos editing techniques include jump cuts and shots being cut in time with the music. Our music video does follow this as we wanted to fit with the mood of the music, keep its pace and fit to the 'spooky'  theme of the music.

Another thing said by the theorist is that the ending to music videos are ambiguous leaving the audience to interpret what happens themselves. Our music video follows this as the audience do not find out what has happened to the boy or what the main girl is going to do next. Also, the theorist states that the narrative is often disjointed so the audience has to watch with more attention, which our music video follows with the change in narrative from sleepover to 'spooky' story.

Finally, in regards to 'diegesis' Vernallis says that the world of the music video is revealed over time. This can be applied to our music video with it gradually becoming clear that there are narratives of the imagined narrative and the sleepover narrative.

Two Step Flow Theory - http://elsiewilliamsona2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/two-step-flow-theory-uncomplete.html

In relation as our music video has an ambiguous ending on the imagined narrative which could lead to opinion leaders to passing onto their interpretation to 'influentials'. This could lead to a lack of creativity with interpretations with it being spoiled by the opinion leaders.

Life Matric Audience Theory - http://elsiewilliamsona2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/life-matrix-audience-theory.html

We think that our audience will fit into the 'Fun/Antics' category group as the characters (played by ourselves) are young individuals. Also, they would be fit into the active in the 'Fun/Antics' description and the different narratives and can create their own interpretation from the music videos ending and ambiguous ending.

Young and Rubicam's- 'Four Consumers' theory - http://elsiewilliamsona2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/young-and-rubicams-four-consumers-theory.html

In relation to this theory I think that our audience fits into 'The Explorer' audience group as with are music video being very narrative paced with this audience type enjoying to find new ideas and discover what things mean. Therefore, they would enjoy our music video with them having to pay close attention to the story to find the meanings of the narrative and explore what may of happened to the boy and what the girl may do next.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory - http://elsiewilliamsona2.blogspot.co.uk/2016/06/pre-birth-music-video-analysis.html

Goodwin sates that certain genres hold certain characteristics. I think that as our song is 'Rock Pop' our video goes against this as typically rock videos are more performance based, meanwhile. ours focuses more on the narrative side. Although it slightly follows what Goodwin states as it does hold some performance shots of the band, it is not what the video is based on.

Another thing that this theorist says is that visuals match the lyrics which our music video does follow with us having the main girl leave a note with the lyrics 'leaves a note'. Furthermore, he says that the visuals match the music, which our music video follows at parts with us recently during editing speeding up the candle sequence so it fits with the music more. But with our music video being many narrative based, there are times when the shots do not always go to the beat of the song.

With regards to this theorist saying that there are demands from the record label making sure that there close ups of the artist our music video goes against this with our music video not showing the bands faces but just them playing their instruments.

Finally, when it comes to intertextual references when it comes to the quick cuts of when the girl has left her room, when filming the shot of the TV we made sure to find a program that would fit the 'spooky' theme. We ended up using a shot from a documentary which was about solving a mystery.

Stuart Hall's Reception Theory - http://elsiewilliamsona2.blogspot.co.uk/2016/06/reception-theory.html

This theory states that our audience could take 3 different reactions to our music video. Some may accept the narrative of the story being told at the sleepover then be aware that the separate narrative is the story being shown visually from what they are imaging. Then once finished watching it will wonder what happened to the boy and discuss it with other audience members. However, others may just accept that it's a 'spooky' story being told at a sleepover but will not really think that much of the ambiguous ending. Alternatively, some audience members may think that the narrative is too complex.

Richard Dyer's Star Theory -   http://elsiewilliamsona2.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/star-theory.html

Richard Dyer argues that through different forms of media a star can be seen to be 'constructed'. This is by the artist or band's look or style to be important. In relation to our package as a whole (website, CD cover and music video) we do not really present our band as a 'commodity' or 'ideology' as how they look is not the focus of our package. Therefore, showing that our band cares more about their music than their image.

Fourth Filming Day For Final Music Video - Session 28

Today we did our fourth filming meeting from 4:00pm - 5:00pm, booked all the equipment that we needed (DLSR and tripod) and I remembered all the props needed (flannel shirt and black dress with a white cardigan).

To begin with we redid the mid shot of the coat for the lyrics 'Leaves her coat' as we realised when editing that the shot we'd previously done had the main girl played by me walking past. This wouldn't make sense as the main girl character had already gone outside.

After that we did the long shots of the main girl rushing up the stairs and going back to her bedroom. We then filmed a close up of her dropping the bag on the bed, a mid shot of the girl on the bed with the shirt and then lying down.

Next we filmed the instrumental parts where the main girl breaks down with worry and stress as she does not know where her lover is. Shots we filmed include a close up of the main girl hitting the wall and leaving a hole in it, a long shot of the girl throwing the shirt and a pillow, and a mid shot of her looking sad and frustrated. Finally, we filmed a close up of Tammy and Laura holding hands for the lyrics 'to the sound of love'.

What went well is we were able to film everything we planned on the shooting schedule and did a range of different shot types and angles so it would be more interesting to watch. To improve we need to make sure that we've cleared everything in shot. Also, we need to improve the match on action shot of when I punch the wall as it did not look like a swift enough movement in editing. We will do this by not changing the camera angle too much when we re-do the shot.

Here are some screenshots of what we filmed:

Fourth Filming Schedule For Final Music Video - Session 27

Here is is what we plan to film tomorrow so that we can tick off what we have done and what needs to be completed. The reason that this is crucial is it makes it so we stay productive and stay focused.

Updating Social Media Accounts - Session 26

Today we decided that we should make sure that we keep our bands social media accounts active so that it is more realistic to how real bands would keep fans updated. On Twitter I added a screenshot of some filming we did on day 2 and Laura posted the photos she did behind the scenes of filming day 3. Furthermore, I decided to start posting on Instagram using photos from each filming day.

Third Filming Day For Final Music Video - Session 25

Today we filmed the shots of the friends destroying the photo of the boy, the girl leaving the note and all the outside shots using the equipment we had booked (DLSR camera, tripod and shoulder mount). As we were mainly filming outside we all made sure that we bought suitable footwear, warm clothing and reminded each other on what props or clothes we needed to bring over a group chat we've created on Facebook.

The first shots that we filmed were a close up of the tap running, a high shot of the picture of the boy drowning in the water and a close up of it being ripped in half. This all went smoothly apart from a final shot of the photo being thrown away as it was too damp so would fall slowly to the floor. But we quickly resolved this problem by using a spare dry picture and throwing that instead as we thought the audience would not be able to tell the difference anyway.

Then we filmed a close up shot of the girl (played by me) opening the box and looking at the picture of the boy which she has kept. After that we filmed some extreme close ups of my eyes for the 'Im Stunned' lyrics and when the main girl goes mad with worry about where the boy has gone. We also did an extreme close up of my mouth for the lyrics 'People marching to the drums, everybody's  having fun to the sound of love' to make sure that we still had some conventions of music videos.

Following that we filmed the shots outside with a long shot and a mid shot of the main girl looking back at her house. Then we did some long shots of the girl making her way to the bench and then used a shoulder mount to do a shot of the camera going around the bench. Next we filmed a long shot and close up of the main girl looking for the boy, and then a long shot of the shirt in a tree and the girl finding it. Once we did this we did a low shot of the trees.

Finally, we did a mid shot of the globe spinning, a long shot of the view and a range of different close up focus areas on me playing the guitar. After that we did a close up shot of Laura marching in different ways that will follow a convention of music videos with the visuals matching the lyrics.

What went well is we filmed everything we planned on the filming schedule. Also, when it came to weather we were lucky as it was forecast to rain but it didn't so we did not have to worry about lighting or finding a way to stay dry.

To improve we need to make sure we remember all the props that we need as we had to use a different flannel shirt as we forgot to bring the one that we needed. Furthermore, we had to think about how to throw the picture of the boy as we soon realised it was too light and damp to throw with force. But we did fix this problem quickly by crumbling a dry version up.

Here are some screen shots of what we did today:

Adding Music To Home And Music Pages - Session 24

Today I found out how to add music to WIXS. As a group we decided to all call the album 'Transylvania' as it is common that the album title is the lead single on it. I came up with some song names and started to add them. Then I realised to be able to add the album to the page we needed music. Therefore, I did some research and found the website  www.purple-planet.com/ which allows allows you to use their music in school projects, so all credit goes to them.

We have added the  rough draft of our album cover by Laura to the album cover photo but this will change once we've finished it.

Second Filming Day For Music Video - Session 22

Today we did our second shooting meeting from 3:30pm - 7:30pm and booked all the equipment we needed (DLSR camera and tripod) and remembered to get 2 batteries in case one ran out. Also, I bought my dress and Tammy had her onesies.

We used the shooting schedule a lot more this time around as it helped us keep on track for what needed to be done and so we knew what had been done we would put a tick next to it. The first bits of filming we did was the quick cuts of when the girl has left which in editing we go it quick cuts to create a dramatic effect. Shots included a long shot of the bedroom, a close up of a mug on the bedside table, a close up of TV being left on and a mid shot of her dressing table. Then we filmed the girl (played by myself) packing her bag in a mid shot, opening the door in a close up, going downstairs in a long shot and leaving her coat in a mid shot.

After that we filmed the footage for the sleepover narrative. First we did a long shot of us all sat on the bed, but since looking at it we feel that we will need to make it darker in editing to keep the 'spooky' theme going. Then we did to a close up of each of us with the torch being held underneath our faces to once again keep the spooky theme. Also, we did the close up shot of Tammy blowing out the matchstick.

Finally, we redid the lip syncing parts that Laura and Tammy in a mid shot. We were able to improve the lighting by using a torch and Tammy's phone and remembered to take down her posters so it looked more professional.

Things that went well include our time management as we were able to get done most of the shots that we were planning to do. Furthermore, we started filming shots from the other narrative (the 'spooky' story). Also, Laura and Tammy's lip syncing shot improved.

To improve we need to set up quicker and make sure that everything we need for what we want to film is available. The reason for this is we were going to film the shots from the 'spooky' story narrative of the girl opening the box and looking at the picture of the boy the she likes, as well as the shots of the girls friends destroying it. However, there were technical problems with Tammy's printer so we will have to film it at the next filming day we have at Tammy's house.

Here are some screenshots of what we did today:

Second Filming Schedule for Final Music Video And Adding Info To The About Page On Website - Session 21

On Wednesday we will continue filming. Here is the schedule we did so we knew what needed to be done:

Also, I added information to the ABOUT page on our website, with a review on the band from a magazine and some general things about what the band have been doing.

Updating The Website With Merch, Social Links and Contacts - Session 20

Today I added the wristbands that Laura made yesterday to our band website and duplicated the 'Buy Now' buttons next to them so that they all matched. We decided as a group to make the price £2.50 as usually small merchandise is cheaper than clothing and I made sure to make the button the 'Price' button was the same.

Here is how it looks:

Then I decided that we needed to complete our social bar displayed at the top right hand side of our website. This involved me creating a YouTube channel and changing the profile to our band logo and the background of a tree to show our theme of trees. After that I created a Instagram account and did the same thing that we have done with all our social media (same profile band logo, description and with a link to our website if possible). I then linked both of these to our social bar on our website.

Here is how they look:

YouTube page
Instagram page
Finally, I added in the contacts for the 'CONTACTS' page. I decided to do contacts for management, PR and booking. This involved me coming up with fake names and emails.

Updating the wristbands for the website - Session 19

Today our group thought it would be best for us to update our wristbands for our bands merchandise line for the same reason we updated the clothing to make it look more professional. We thought Laura would be the best to design these with her artistic abilities. Laura came up with doing a falcon icon on the front of 2 of the wristbands, as well as adding the band name and some of our singles (Transylvania) lyrics on 2 of them. Then on the last one Laura decided to draw a simple tree design (to fit with the theme we have on our website and social media and also the CD design idea we came up with), and with the band name on the back.

Here is what they look like:

Starting To Use Social Media Created And Added More - Session 18

Tonight our group decided that we should start to use our twitter page (to make our band seem more realistic). Laura added a bio for our band, added our location, and put in a link to our website so as we are more connected, making it easier to get recognised. We also decided to tweet our first 2 times. Here is what Laura updated with regards to our information and the 2 tweets that we tweeted:

We also decided to create a Facebook page (which can also be linked to our band website). We added our band logo as our profile picture and stuck tot the same theme as our Twitter page. We added a 'send email' button onto our page as well as the events that we put on our website (the gigs that we made up for our band). Finally, we added the Facebook link to our social bar on our website so it was easy to get to.

Here is a link to the page for our Facebook page:

Narrative for Music Video

Here is the overall narrative for our music video:
  • The music video begins at a sleepover where the girl is telling a 'spooky' story to her friends. Then the camera zooms into the book and it jump cuts to the story told.
  •  The main girl opens a tin which includes a picture of the boy then she packs, writes a note then leaves home to find the boy and it is raining outside.
  •  The narrative cuts back to the sleepover scene and the girls friends are teasing her and then they drown and rip up the photo of the boy and throw it away.
  •  The video then cuts to the band playing for some of the chorus then for the other part of the chorus it goes back to the sleepover.
  • It then switches back to the story being told and the main girl is looking around where she meets the boy and cannot find him. Instead she finds a flannel shirt belonging to him. She begins to worry and makes her way home and clutches hugs the shirt hoping nothing bad has happened to him.
  • The narrative then cuts back to the sleepover to the girl telling the 'spooky story'.
  • Suddenly it cuts back to the main girl but she is going mad with stress and worry.
  • Finally it goes back to the sleepover scene and the candles are blown out to signify the end.

Starting Music Video Filming Meeting - Session 17

Today we did our first film meeting from 3:30pm - 7:30pm and focused on interior shots. We were prepared and booked all the equipment that we needed (DLSR, Shoulder Mount and Tripod) and remembered what costumes were needed.

To begin with we did myself lip syncing through the whole song and made some lighting choices. The reason for this is we wanted to make sure that we created the 'spooky' atmosphere that we planned in pre-production. This involved us turning the lights off and lighting candles, as well as using a torch under our faces. This further makes it evident that my character telling a spooky story.

After that we took the shots of Tammy lighting the candles from a variety of angles which will be used at the beginning of the music video. Then we did some shots of the candles burning and the candles been blown out. The reason we decided to do this is that it makes the structure of our music video more clear with the candles being lit showing the beginning and them being blown out the end. Also, it further highlighted the spooky theme within our music video.

The last thing that we did was film Laura and Tammy lip syncing their parts. However, we feel that we will need to film this again as Tammy's posters in the background made our video not look as professional as we'd liked and the lighting for their shot needs to be improved.

What went well is that we were able to take a good shot of me lip syncing all the song which will make editing easier as we can just line it up straight away to the song. Also, the candle shots we took set the mood for our music video.

To improve we need to bring a spare battery as we only brought one to Tammy's house and it soon ran out. We left it to charge for an hour but it only gave us another 20 minutes to film. Therefore, although we think we shot some good footage we felt we could get more stuff done if we had gotten a spare battery. Also, we need to take shots which are more stable as when we watched clips back they were not as steady as we thought they were. To avoid this we will use the tripod and shoulder mount as much as possible.

Here are some screenshots of what we did today:

First Filming Schedule For Final Music Video - Session 16

Tomorrow myself and my group are starting the filming process for our music video. In advance we thought it best to write a shooting schedule so we knew what needed to be done in it.

Here it is:

Creating a Twitter Account For Our Band - Session 15

Today my group and I decided to make a twitter page for our band as we could link it on our band website.

We decided to put our profile picture as our band logo and set the header as a picture that previously took when I went 'exterior location scouting'. We decided to use a photo where there is some red incorporated in it, so as it fits with the red in our logo.

Here is the link to the Twitter page that we made:

Two Step Flow Theory

Developing Merchandise And Updates To Our Website and CD Cover Inspiration- Session 14

Today we decided that we should update our merchandise so it would be more professional. We thought that it would be a good idea to use the eagle from the bands logo to show a consistency in the bands design and branding. I thought that instead of using cartoon templates of clothing we should use plain real clothing to make it more realistic. I used Google images to find some pieces of clothing and then edited our falcon onto them.

Here is what they look like:

I then added these to the website and we decided that the t-shirts should cost £15 and the jumpers £20 as they are usually higher in price. I added 'Price' and 'Buy Now' buttons next to each one and decided on their placing and colouring. Furthermore, I added two headers 'T- Shirts' and 'Jumpers' in a pastel orange as it matched our aesthetic.

Also, I updated the 'Home' and 'Gigs' pages with tour dates and where they would be taking place. We decided that we would choose small gigging places as our band is not fully established but is just starting in their career, therefore, naming smaller places of performing would make more sense then an arena.

Here are the updates to our website:

On Homepage
On Gigs Page
Finally, while checking my Twitter I found some artwork of a nature based piece on animals and thought that it would fit our tree theme shown across our website perfectly. This inspired us so we decided that Laura should draw a version with a falcon. We think that we could use this as part of our albums front or back cover.

Here is our inspiration and our version drawn by Laura:

The version Laura drew.

Here is a rough draft of how it could look used as an album cover edited by Laura:
